Grass GIS was developed for US army back in 1982 then they stopped from further developing it in 1995 after that in 1998 Markus Neteler to make an advance modification by adding graphical interface for an ordinary users.
Grass GIS was used in land management and environment planning by the US Army on Unix systems later it moved to Linux Systems.
Grass GIS handles Raster images, topology, and vector data also it does handle image processing and geographic database.
Grass GIS support 2D and 3D for Raster and Vector geographic data in none interconnect layers as known image processing systems do.
Grass GIS is based on command line interface but with development of graphical interface the commands is wrapped by it.
